Summer is the hottest season of the year. It is usually marked by temperate weathers so most people take a vacation to get away some place else because of the fine weather. people also flock to the beach and get a tan.

One particularly cold morning in north New York, so cold that the coffee in my thermos had lost all warmth by the time I reached campus, my international relations professor lectured on international economics. That day we learned about mono-cropping, soil depletion, and women in Africa who worked hard on their farms but were unable to sell their crops for enough money to make a living. Having spent my high school summers working on a flourishing, sustainable society farm, I was intrigued by the contrast in the middle of the bountiful Hudson Valley and the arid poverty of the African subsistence farmers.

The following summer, I declared a major in international economics, took a summer job at one of New Paltz’s six Csa farms, and moved into a house on a small herb farm. After a strenuous and rewarding summer, I spent my senior year focusing on the economic viability of small-scale and sustainable farming in the United States. After graduation, I took over managing the herb farm.

The society farm I had grown up on ran well, like our 1989 dump truck. It was non-commercial and largely self-contained. The herb farm, on the other hand, was a market enterprise. Rather than harvesting for a society or for local customers, we drove to Nyc to sell at a farmer’s market. The herbs were processed into teas and other value-added products, packaged in plastic.

In this new environment, I began to interrogate the validity of the term ‘sustainable farm.’ The decision not to use harmful chemicals alone does not make an operation sustainable. What about all the resources used to vehicle our goods to a store 90 miles away, and to furnish the plastic that they were packaged in? Or the energy used by our food processors and freezers? Yet, due to the size and nature of the farm, we needed to sell these value-added (i.e. Processed) goods in order to turn a profit. And to sell these goods, needed a store larger than the New Paltz area could provide. One of the best things anyone can do to promote sustainability is to shop for local food, particularly from farmer’s markets in your area.

For such a farm, where does sustainability meet profitability? How do we promote local, sustainable production? We have taken small steps towards addition our sustainability. Our farm kitchen is lit with Cfl’s. We have downsized to a smaller vehicle and begun the transition to compostable packaging. In the end, there are only so many steps we can take towards environmental sustainability while remaining economically sustainable. In order that sustainable farming can come to be a custom rather than an ideology, I believe there will have to be a paradigmatic shift in our consumption habits as a community, a country, and a people.

You don’t have to be here long to get the picture. We are in lake country. Not surprisingly, many blogs and writings of winter skiers attribute to the area the misnomer that we are primarily a summer resort destination. Only Lake Tahoe, Flathead Lake in Montana, and some man-made lakes are larger. It is 65 miles long, and 1,150 feet deep in some regions (5th in the Us). Fed by Clark Fork River and drained by the Pend Oreille River. It is surrounded by national forests and many small towns, together with Bayview, Hope, and Sandpoint. All but the southern tip of the lake is in Bonner County, the southern tip which is home to Farragut State Park, the original home of the Farragut Naval Training Station, and the home of the Navsea’s Naval surface Warfare town Carderock Division’s Acoustic research Detachment (Ard) is in Kootenai County.

The lake is home to many species of fish including: rainbow trout, lake trout, perch, crappie, bass, walleye, whitefish and kamloops. The forests are known to have discrete pines, such as ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, poplar and western larch. Whitetail deer, squirrels, black bears, coyotes, elk, cougar, and bobcats are known to reside in these forests. Bald Eagles, osprey, owls, hummingbirds, hawks, woodpeckers, ducks and the mountain bluebird are seen in the skies colse to the lake.

It is also believed that the eastern side of the lake was in the path of the aged Missoula Flood. This is the great event that shaped much of the Inland Empire of the Pacific Northwest. The Missoula Flood is an Ice Age event that has been featured on Nova, and refer to the catastrophic floods that swept periodically over eastern Washington, Idaho, and Montana, and down the Columbia River Gorge at the end of the last ice age. Farragut State Park is located where the Lake Missoula Floods broke out from the end of Lake Pend Oreille.

The floods were the corollary of the periodic sudden rupture of the ice dam on the Clark Fork River that created Glacial Lake Missoula. After each rupture of the ice dam, the waters of the lake would rush down the Clark Fork and the Columbia River, inundating much of eastern Washington and the Willamette Valley in western Oregon. After the rupture, the ice would reform, recreating Glacial Lake Missoula once again.

Geologists evaluation that the cycle of flooding and reformation of the lake lasted on midpoint of 55 years and that the floods occurred almost 40 times over the 2,000 year period in the middle of 15,000 and 13,000 years ago.

The other great shaping feature was the area’s glaciers. The rugged large beauty of this area of North Idaho was formed by these two components. For thousands of years, these two military of nature were actively exciting the scenery of North Idaho. The glacial ice sheets moved land, mountain, and water over centuries. The floods occurred over relatively shorter periods. The areas of the Lake Pend Oreille and the Clark Fork River held a dam of ice that towered over two thousand feet today’s lake level. When this dam failed many times over the millennia a deluge of water was released in unimaginable proportions at speeds of 60 miles per hour and hundreds of feet deep, creating military great enough to shape the scenery we know today from here to Portland, Oregon.

First there is obviously kayaking and whitewaters. Big lake and river activities consist of boating, sailing, boat racing, and jet skiing. Fishing is an absolute must, and while the government in a big-brotherly fashion had almost decimated the fish population many years ago by introducing tiny shrimp to the lake, the fish populations are now manufacture gains at recovery. The Feds had done this to our lake to try and increase the lake’s fish counts, but as is often the case, the opposite occurred. You can snorkel or scuba, swim or dive off of many deep dive spots. You can even watch the submarine races. Along the lake’s protected coves one can find great water skiing and wakeboarding, and camping is one of our area’s popular pass times. Prevailing southwesterly winds supply navigation enthusiasts many days of capability boating. We have many navigation regattas the entire summer, as well as poker runs, and there are talks of having some serious stiletto and cigarette boat races. Plus, if mild navigation is not your style, canvassed racing takes place many times a year.

If kayaking is your thing then you are in luck. With a lake over 65 miles long one can spend countless hours paddling along the lake. The many tributaries offer secluded paddling with a wide range of wildlife to be found. For the whitewater enthusiasts there are numerous rivers and streams to get your heart pounding. The Moyie River, famed for its Class 5 rapids is only an hour away. The Selway and Lochsa are within easy driving length and offer even the most seasoned kayak enthusiast a real test. The Pack River and clergyman River also supply kayakers abundance of great water to play on.

When visiting Sandpoint, make it a point to rent a boat and eye why so many population have fallen in love with the area. If you’re uncomfortable navigating on unknown waters, take a fishing charter or a scenic cruise. If you do settle to take a fishing charter, make sure you get abundance of rest prior to departure as this lake offers trophy rainbow trout that will challenge your skill as well as your endurance.

I just complete reading the book “Teens and the Job Game” by Beverly Sloma. As the Ceo of a teen job site, I often read books on the topic of getting your first job. In my opinion, this book is one of the best ones that I have read in this category. The basic theme of the book is what teens need to do right now to put in order for their first job and also what to do to result when they land the job.

What I especially liked about the book was the author’s passion. The author has a Master’s degree in education, and that certainly comes straight through with her knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject. It was easy to get drawn into this book because the author was so engaging. I also like the fact that she uses real world examples of what has worked for teens in the past. She also sprinkles in a lot of inspirational quotes to keep the reader engaged and entertained.

I also like the fact that the author addresses clear issues that all teens have to be aware of when going on interviews. I appreciate that she emphasizes that teens need to speak well, dress well, and have good posture. These are the basics, but it always helps to have the basic reinforced.

In closing, I think this is a must read for any teen that is finding for a part time job or summer job. In fact, I would advise that school systems buy this book and hand it out all students as required reading.

If you plan on eating it, think about what you’re putting into it! Thankfully, these days we have a good choice of organic and low-toxicity sprays to deal with insects. Purist organic gardeners do not spray at all. Their religious doctrine lies in general in well composted soil, which produces healthy, robust plants less susceptible to pests and disease. Quarterly watering and feeding with seaweed based fertiliser also boosts plant health.

Courgettes

Cut with secateurs when fruit is 6cm – 7cm long and skin is tender.
Remember flowers are edible too.
Liquid feed every four to five weeks (too much fertilizer produces leaves, not fruit).
Poor fruit set can be due to wet weather and lack of bees.
Hand pollinate by rubbing male flowers against female flowers (those with a small swelling at base of flower).
Mulch with straw to preclude fruit spoiling.
Water base of plants to avoid mildew.
Plant second crop now to prolong harvest.

Beans

Pick when young and tender, before pods go lumpy from swollen seeds.
Pick every three to five days.
Don’t over feed – too much nitrogen promotes leaf growth.
Keep five or six of the best pods at the end of season and save seed for next year.

Mesclun Mix

Snip leaves when about 7cm – 10cm tall.
New leaves grow within a fortnight, but plants are exhausted after a few pickings.
Sow every three to four weeds, so there’s all the time a new patch to snip.
Mesclun is a fast growing crop, so no additional seeding is required after sowing.
