Traditionally, summer has been one of the most difficult times of year for most martial arts schools. Thankfully, however, savvy studio owners have developed new ways to really generate more revenue over the summer months than they do during the other months of the year.
How, you ask? For those of you who don’t mind teaching kids, the reply is “starting a summer day camp.”
Summer
Now, I’ve heard from a lot of instructors before that they don’t want to teach kids. All I can say to that is, before you opened your school you probably didn’t want to go to your job every day, either – but you did it because it paid the bills.
So, look at this like a temporary day job, but one that is a lot more profitable and a whole heck of a lot more fun (I mean, c’mon…you’ll be getting paid to play all day!)
The lowest Line is…Summer Day Camps increase Your lowest Line
If you doubt that starting a summer karate camp is worth your time, I’m here to tell you that it is and then some. We held very small summer camps for the last four years before we sold our Georgetown location. We typically ran camp for 8 weeks, taking a week or two off in the middle of summer and before school started.
Averaging just 15 kids per week, at 5 per week minimum tuition, our camps generated an extra ,500 per month in revenue. We kept our overhead for camp expenses (including part-time help, vehicles, and activities) down to less than per week per child, so we profited practically 0 per week for each kid in camp.
Could you use an extra ,000 – ,000 this summer? I conception so…
If You Don’t Know Where to Start – Get Some guidance on How to Run a Summer Camp
If you don’t know where to start, don’t feel bad – I didn’t at first, either. The first summer camp I ever ran was back colse to 2000, the summer after I got married. Oh, I had done some piddly little day camps and a Spring Break or Christmas Break camp or two, but nothing on the scale of what we were about to attempt.
In preparation for this momentous event, we had just flown in to spend four days with a very prosperous school owner who ran after-school and summer camps in Florida, and I had seen for myself how prosperous his camps were.
In addition, I had spent some days hanging out with someone else school owner who ran a studio about 40 miles from my school. This guy made most of his revenue by running camps… Huge camps, actually, with colse to 125 kids all year round.
I also spent a lot of time with a friend in Houston later, when we decided to run after school camps as well. All this consideration and note-taking paid off in dividends when we started our first camp… We really made close to ,000 that summer, over a few short months!
Planning Considerations for Your Summer Day Camp
There are just a consolidate of things to reconsider as you plan your summer camp:
1. State laws – It is your accountability to make sure you are abiding by all laws. Many states have licensing regulations concerning day care that may or may not apply to your program. Save yourself some headaches and do your homework on state and local laws before you start your camp.
2. Advertising – Late March and early April is the time when parents are selecting summer activities for their kids. You need to start advertising before then if you plan to run a prosperous summer camp.
3. Communication and activities – You need places to take the kids in your camp to get them out of the school for a few hours, and you need a way to transport them there. When we first started out, we used to rent a van two or three times a week during our summer camp.
Then, a friend showed us how to get buses for less than what it costs to rent them all summer. Form out how and where you’re going to shuttle your kids colse to right now so you don’t have to worry about it later.
4. It has to be fun – Okay, let me make this clear. You’re not going to furnish any black belts or super-star athletes over eight to twelve weeks of camp. Many of these kids will be new to martial arts training, so you want them to leave your camp wanting to come back (camps are also a good way to get new students, you know).
Maintain discipline and safety, but keep the training basic, do fun stuff, and let the kids have a good time. If the kids go home happy, they’ll tell their friends, and you’ll get more kids in your summer day camps as time goes on.

With the current gloomy weather and nights drawing in, you might think that summer 2011 is a very long time away. But in the fashion world, that’s not the case at all. The catwalks are full of summer styles which will be hitting the shops as early as January. Before you know it, the sun will be out again and you’ll be enjoying strolls in the park. But what will you be wearing? One thing that’s inescapable within fashion is that last years clothing just won’t do for the next season. The aim of this record is to look at what styles are set to be hot for summer 2011.
T shirt Colours
Summer colours are all the time much nicer than the drab winter colours and next summer is no different. Browns, black and greys are surely out of style for the warmer weather. Instead you need to look at more vibrant colours and there are two key spectrum that are set to be in trend. The first is the warm palette containing reds and oranges. From this palette, spicy pink is set to be one of the key colours for the summer. The second palette of colours are water based such as blue and turquoise. From this palette aquamarine is due to be very popular.
Summer
It’s also prominent to remember that colour also conveys mood and personality and this is no separate when wearing coloured t shirts. spicy pink conveys passion and joy whilst aquamarine conveys calmness and tranquility.
T shirt Fits
The fit of the t shirt is very prominent for next season too. Relaxed styles with lots of material are out whilst more fitted styles than cling to the contours of the body are in. Round necks are the cut of option and to reflect the warm weather short sleeves will be in style, as will sleeveless vests.
The hem of the designer t shirts end on the hips, a slightly longer style than seen across the last incorporate of seasons. This length is designed to cover the top of the jeans or shorts and is the faultless opposite of the baggy underwear waistband look seen last summer.
T shirt Styles
Last summer the key trend was for heavily embellished t shirts which featured studs, glitter and contrasting materials. This look is a thing of the past and for next summer embellishments are out of trend. Instead, t shirts will highlight bold vintage inspired styles. Police 883 t shirts contain a range of styles which are set to be hot next summer. One such style is the Toby t shirt which is available in purple – a colour from the warm palette and aqua – a colour from the water based palette. This Police t shirt features silver, pink and black print to the front for an up to date look.
For those who prefer a polo style of t shirt, the Police 883 t shirts range also includes some uncomplicated designs which will look great on a warm summer’s day. The Gasquet t shirt is available in pink and red as well as purple, azure and green.

Shapes for this season are discrete with a move toward the ‘anything goes’ mentality. While bikinis still reign supreme, monokinis continue to be favorite with the younger crowd. One piece malliots are chronic to make a comeback over all ages and are now seen as popular ,favorite and elegant rather than dowdy and uninteresting.
Tankinis are always big sellers due to the fact they offer the wearer flexibility in being able to cover or expose their stomach area.
Those searching for a briefer look are turning towards bikinis with tie sides and bandeau tops which are exquisite for avoiding unsightly tan lines.
Frills have been a huge trend on the runway this season, a look that has spilled over to clothing. The great benefit of frills on swimsuits in that it adds volume to areas that might need it, exquisite for women with small busts or those seeing to add a little size to their booty.
Other embellishments to look out for are metallic rings in discrete shapes and a smattering of beads or sequins in some collections.

Zebra high heels are going to be a fashion trend to look for this summer as animal print footwear has been gracing the catwalks and fashion magazines with addition frequency. Put on some popular ,favorite zebra, or leopard-print slingbacks, pumps, sandals, or shoes and walk on the wild side. It is even o.k. To mix animal patterns together by pairing them with plainer accessories. So feel free to indulge yourself and go wild.
Fashion Tips
1. Because of the flashy nature of zebra high heels it is commonly good to down play them with simpler colors and accessories. Think pencil skirts and black tights or even denim.
Summer
2. In terms of it being accepted to mix animal patterns I would recommend discretion. It is easy to speedily become loud. They are exotic and very sexy but when worn with the wrong clothing they can be less than impressive.
3. Try to pick up a few instances of black or white in your outfit to honestly make them pop. This could be white cuffs, or a bracelet, ivory earrings, a belt or a necklace but I don’t think I would go with an animal print purse, unless you are tall and skinny. The tall and skinny ones can get away with almost anything. The rest have to be creative.
4. Keep it simple and have fun.
Zebra High Heels On Display
Zebra high heels have been getting wild on the catwalks this season with international fashion designers like Ashish featuring them in their collections. The Dark Continent is back with a vengeance this summer: anything African is in. Animal prints, feathers, wrapped headdresses, exotic tribal jewelry, and boldly printed dresses are all on the hot list this season.
Celebrities like Paris Hilton and Sarah Jessica Parker have been seen sporting zebra print high heels recently confirming that animal prints are as big as gladiator sandals are going to be.

Once called the Middle East, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Israel have come to be popular trip destinations. Visited by themselves or in combination, most travelers return satisfied and surprised by their trip experience. For many, they have been on a truly suited holiday with a difference. So why is this so? To best write back this, we need to know a itsybitsy more about these countries and how to trip to and within them.
*How to get there
Summer
Most travelers come by air. The national capitals of Damascus, Amman, Beirut and Tel Aviv all have international airports that are serviced by a range of international and Middle Eastern carriers. Both bus and underground car trip is potential between most of the countries. Generally these are via a estimate of singular crossing points like Syria-Lebanon and Syria-Jordan (at Derá on the new highway that links the two countries). Land routes exist to bordering countries. Land trip into/from Israel is more restricted. The most common point of entry is via the King Hussein (Allenby) Bridge from Jordan. Syria has a somewhat dated rail network. Some services only run weekly but those on the popular central routes operate some services each day.
*How to get around
Trains, buses and taxi’s form the centerpiece of Middle Eastern trip services. Car hire with a guide is provided by many local traveler operators. They Generally are cost effective and worth considering. Use Google to find them and always ask for (and check) references. Most will wish half of the booking fee wired to them before they will confirm the bookings. A estimate of international fellowships along with the overland fellowships offer tours. Again check with Google. A estimate of universities offer summer archaeological digs. Many of these are fee based and no caress is required.
*When to go
The Middle East enjoys a Mediterranean atmosphere but the summers are hot and the winters cold, especially in the north. March to May is the best time to visit. Those who want to soak up the sun will find the coastal areas mid summer comfortable as temperatures are often influenced by cooler coastal breezes. The area suffers from winter rainfall that can make sightseeing difficult and snow covers the mountains between Lebanon and Syria mid winter.
*The Countries
Syria – Syria is modern, easy to trip in and relatively safe. It’s affordable if you keep away from the more high-priced five star international hotels. It has a myriad of charms with excellent food, spectacular, scenery, tons of places of historic interest and friendly people. English is Generally spoken in most hotels and markets in the major centers. Damascus is the major attraction with its spectacular, markets and historic mosques and palaces. The Umayyad Mosque and the nearby mausoleum of Saladin (one of the most heroes of Arab’s history), are a “must see”. Plan a merge of days to enjoy Damascus. Think at staying in one of the renovated boutique hotels that have sprung up in the past ten years. Many of these are antique palaces in the Old City and are well worth the itsybitsy extra cost. Do take the time to drive out to Palmyra for the site of the city that built to rival Rome. Homs with its water wheels in on the road to Apamea. This has an avenue of two kilometers of granite columns. Both are worth visiting and are part of 20 or more major archaeological sites that can be visited by tourists. Wandering nearby ruins of forts, mosques, churches and palaces provides a spectacular, insight into what life was like two thousand years ago. Looping back towards Damascus is the most preeminent of the Crusader castles, Krak des Chevaliers. It is remarkably intact and it will be enjoyed by castle enthusiasts.
Jordan – Jordan has a huge selection of intriguing history to offer the tourists. It is steeped in the history of the Old Testament. The antique cities of Petra and Jerash date back to Roman times when they were great trading cities along the Silk Road. Jerash is the “Pompeii of the East” and needs a itsybitsy background reading to fully appreciate the historic context of the site. Take your time to gawk it; you are walking through centuries of history. Although Amman is the relatively modern capital of Jordan, you’ll find the satellite city of Salt with its narrow streets and quaint houses is worth the visit. Jordan has a intriguing history of craft, Bedouin weaving, embroidery, porcelain and ceramics, jewellery and glassblowing. These crafts are still very much part of Jordanian life today. The Bedouin hospitality and spectacular, local cuisine is legendary.
Driving south from Amman you’ll find the now spreading town of Petra. To walk down the half mile long suq, you will be surprised by the attractiveness of the pink stone Treasury at the entry of the old city of Petra. It will take your breath away. Read about Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, who discovered Petra in 1812, before you go. His is unmistakably an spectacular, story. South of Petra is the now modern port of Aqaba made preeminent by Lawrence of Arabia. West of here you’ll find Wadi Rum where the film of Lawrence’s war-time exploits was made. Here, an selection is to stay with the Bedouins in their cloth covered black tents. They are remarkably comfortable. Take a camel ride out to the underground camp where Lawrence planned his desert campaigns. You might return a itsybitsy saddle sore but you will have unmistakably “ridden” in the footsteps of history.
Lebanon – Lebanon is a relatively small country. The highlights are Generally along the coast. Here is the colorful coastal town of Byblos and added north is the antique Crusader city of Tripoli with it’s intriguing souqs (markets), mosques and hammams (baths). Turning inland, you will pass through the picturesque villages of the Qadisha Valley, through the Cedars and on to historic Baalbeck which has magnificent Roman ruins said by some to be the best preserved in the world, The route continues through the vineyards at Bekaa and then Umayyad ruins of Aanjar. nearby is the charming village of Deiral-Qamar and the Beiteddine palace with its spectacular, gardens.
Israel – Don’t ignore Israel as a potential trip destination. Entrance difficulties can be overcome by specific planning or with the help of an experienced trip operator. It’s the Holy Land and steeped in history. Most visitors head for Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Jericho but there lots of itsybitsy know archaeological sites like the old Roman capital of Galilee called Tzipori. In Jerusalem, the old City of David, The Citadel and Church of the Holy Sepulcher with the nearby Wailing Wall, draws the most tourists. What is believed to be the oldest church in the world is in Bethlehem. A silver star marks the place where it is believed that Christ was born.
Some tourists choose to visit the Dead Sea. It is off Highway 90 west of Jerusalem. Personally, although unique, I think that it is overrated. Those with more time might Think visiting Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. added a field you’ll find Masada with its spectacular ruined fortress.
Take care in Israel photographing or showing interest in border and military installations or personnel. You’ll get used the very safe bet protection presence.
*Visas
All these countries have dissimilar visa requirements. Generally Israel does not wish a visa for most western countries. Tourists are allowed a stay of up to 90 days. However, it is vital to avoid getting your passport stamped upon entry or exit as this causes problems of entry into Lebanon and Syria. Ask the border officials to stamp your entry permit instead. Great still, put Israel last on your itinerary. Jordanian visas can be obtained upon arrival at the airport and at most border crossings. It is best to get Syrian visas in advance. Usa, most Eu, Australian, Canadian and New Zealand passport holders can get a visa to enter Lebanon at the border. Jordan allows entry/exit to Israel via the King Hussein (Allenby) Bridge without a multi-entry visa.
*Recommendation
The countries of the Middle East are intriguing and intriguing trip destinations. The people that you’ll meet are friendly and if your leave politics aside, you’ll have a very enjoyable trip experience. Middle eastern cooking is a feature and in all countries you’ll find an spectacular, array of low cost local restaurants. Try the local beers and wines and few of the specialized drinks like Arak (Lion’s milk) which is Generally served with mezze. Talk to your trip agent or check out trip sites on Google. You are guaranteed to have a holiday of lifetime.

Traveling with Children
Always a joy, often confusion, a bit of frustration, a few moments of “why did we do this,” and then perfection again. Traveling with children, especially throughout Europe or any foreign country, takes a bit more planning, assosication and alot of flexibility. Following are some tips to making your trip memorable.
Summer
Swimming Pool
If possible, get a hotel with a pool (an indoor pool in the fall and winter). Every afternoon we would return to the hotel and take a swim and relax. This turned out to be great for everybody and a priority in picking a hotel if available. This goes without saying that this is a must in the summer but a great treat in the fall, spring and winter if it is an indoor pool.
Collection
After a long seminar our daughter located on collecting sure things; a doll from the country and a patch (available in any tourist shop) and gorgeous rocks. She spent hours looking for the right doll that she could add to her variety with the budget we had given her. Other times she took to looking the rock; in a organery or a store.
Train, Plane, Taxi, Boat
Our main source of entertainment was a notebook to write and draw in and colored pens. Jean would draw Zoe pictures of the local buildings, castles and landscape and she would color it for hours. This way she was building her own coloring book designed especially for her. As she got a bit older (7) she started to draw the buildings herself and loved to spend hours with us in a cafe drawing a church or statue.
Visiting castles, museums, abbeys
Our daughter was mesmerized with the audio tours ready at most historic site. We found that when she had her audio tour she happily walked straight through the cathedral or castle listening to every word and we were able to do the same. Surprisingly this also translated to live tour guides. The key was to get up close and personal and make her feel like they were talking to her. She loved every tiny and learned fascinating tidbits such as; “Budapest is great, because you can live in Buda where the nicer homes are and work in Pest where the jobs are.”
Finding the tiny Train in each hamlet you visit
Most villages throughout Europe have a small train that takes you and your children nearby the hamlet or town. It provides a fantastic adventure for them and a great view of the entire city for the adults. If a train isn’t ready go for what my friends call the “old lady bus,” which are the open air buses that will give you a tour of the city. Another great alternative.
Find the Parks
Your first task is to find the parks nearby and when they are open. These come to be principal respites for everybody including yourself. Bring a book and relax while your children play.
Tourist Offices
As an adult I often avoided going into tourist offices as I wanted to gawk on my own. With a child this is a must. gawk the stacks of brochures on fascinating things to do and find out about an alligator park, a water slide, a doll museum or other attractions you wouldn’t think of going to visit. They often can be the best underground treasure you find.
Book longer stays with kids clubs
Renting a house is great but you will still be the entertainment. When potential book a week in one place where there are activities for kids. Throughout Europe there a variety of groups renting condos and apartments in the mountains, beaches and rivers with kids activities. Many holiday villages also have kids camps and activities for the week – so ask the hotel you book at if such activities exist. Check out Pierre Vacances in France and Nouvelle Frontiere. When this isn’t potential try to stay at least three days in one location and vary cities with beaches, mountains, and rivers where kids can just play.

It would be impossible to count how many times each summer a professional groomer is asked to shave a client’s dog in an endeavor to make it cooler. Here in rural Montana where the summers are scorching, I have had requests to shave practically every breed imaginable. It is a common misconception that all dogs would automatically be cooler if they had less hair.
First it is important to think is what type of hair the dog has. All dogs can basically be divided into two groups. First we have those who need to have their cut on a regular basis, such as poodles, shih tzus, cocker spaniels, lhasa apsos, terriers, etc. Dogs in this group have hair that would continue growing longer and longer until it was cut. These breeds can be shaved with no problem. Taking off excess coat by shaving them down in hot weather will truly make them more comfortable and cooler, and will not cause damage to the dog’s coat. However, this is not the case with the second group.
Summer
This group of dogs consists of all the other breeds, longhaired or shorthaired, whose hair grows to one length only and then remains that length. These dogs typically shed much more than dogs in the first group. These contain retrievers, pomeranians, great Pyranees, chow chows, pugs, German shepherds, huskies, and the list goes on and on. Their coats act as insulators against the elements, and should never be shaved. After all, do you take the insulation out of your home in the summer to make it cooler? truly not, and the same goes for these dogs as well.
The coats of the dogs in the second group consist of two different types of hair, a soft, downy undercoat, and harsher, thicker hairs called guard hairs. These two types of hairs are truly designed to mat and tangle up to form a hard shell or pelt colse to the animal to keep their temperature regulated in greatest weather. Without proper brushing and grooming on a regular basis, this often happens, important the owner to the false closing that the coat needs to be shaved off to make the dog cooler. However, shaving the hair off of these dogs takes away their insulation from the heat, truly production these dogs hotter and more uncomfortable. Shaving also makes them more susceptible to sunburn as well.
It is important to understand that if you make the decision to go ahead and shave these types of dogs anyway, their hair will never be the same again. Shaving will turn the coat forever. Not only does the hair grow back in very slowly, but also it grows back in much softer and sparse. The color of the coat will be different too, as the hair will be at least two shades lighter than it was before.
One of the worst things about shaving a dog with this type of hair is that the dog can originate what we call clipper alopecia. In uncomplicated terms, it just means that the hair does not grow back. This is caused by a turn in the guard hairs when they are cut. Clipper alopecia commonly develops first in a patch on the dog’s back, placed right in front of the tail. After shaving, only thin layer of hair will grow back there, commonly reaching a maximum length of about one half of an inch. Dogs that originate this condition have coats that appear to be moth-eaten. This is not an keen sight!
Okay, so what happens if you do have a dog that is matted to the skin and appears to be too hot in this balmy weather? Seek the advice of a properly trained groomer to conclude the best procedure of action. With the many miracle grooming products that are out there on the market, many times these coats can be saved with a consolidate of intense grooming sessions and some endeavor in daily grooming from the owner. This optimizes the dog’s coat to achieve its insulating tasks properly. Occasionally, the coat truly is beyond repair and does in fact have to be shaved to start over. Your groomer can help you with this decision and give you pointers on how to avoid this situation in the future.
It is important to note that if you have a mixed breed dog, it can be difficult to conclude which group the dog falls into. Most groomers can evaluate a dog’s coat upon inspection to let you know which group the dog falls into, and what procedure of operation to take, the risks involved, etc.
As a old professional groomer, I strongly feel that it is the groomer’s accountability to fully illustrate these things to clients wanting to have their dogs shaved. It is important to share knowledge with the clients to make the best decision inherent for the pet in need of grooming.

So keep this in mind when shopping for all the wide range of 2012 clothes for the summer, or even your maternity needs, the partner in your life and even the kids and cousins you love and adore. Getting it right the first time is commonly the goal for most of us, and getting it right can affect our lives in ways that we don’t often think about or even realize.
So before you go running off to the nearest big box store, or grab your credit card and put it next to your keyboard for online shopping, think about these things and make wise decisions when buying your summer clothes for 2012.
One of my biggest challenges is buying for my man. He will always hum and haw at every item I bring home to him so! It is obvious. The next time you want to shop for your man, women or kid, bring them along with you so you can get great results for shopping for summer clothes in 2012.
